Micro Calcifications

Photo of cancerous microcalcifications

In the above images there are noticeable tiny white specs in clusters. These are called "microcalcifications". Their irregular shape make them suspicious for cancer.

This image shows where the radiologist has inserted a wire so that the surgeon knows exactly where the calcifications are. This image better shows the irregular shapes and clustering. This particular patient was subsequently diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

It's important to know that not all calcifications are cancerous, but they all should be watched and/or biopsied to rule cancer out. The earlier cancer is diagnosed and treated the better the outcome is for the patient.
