Estrogen, Progesterone, and Breast Cancer

Certain types of cancer are fueled by estrogen and/or progesterone receptors. Breast cancers that are hormone-positive are slower growing and have a better chance of responding to hormone suppression therapy as compared to hormone-negative breast cancers.

Human Epidermal Growth Factor(HER-2/neu) Serum Test

Normal breast cells release HER-2 protein into the blood. The normal level is <15ng/ml. Many clinical research studies have shown that women with early breast cancer can also have elevated ( >15ng/ml) levels of HER-2 neu. The serum HER-2/neu test is a simple blood test and it specifically measures the levels of the HER-2/neu protein released by the cell into the blood.

Increasing Levels of HER-2 may be a signal to do additional scans:
